Her friend, Sophie, noticed and gave her a gentle nudge. “Hey, Mia, are you with us?” she joked, smiling.
Mia laughed and shrugged, but Sophie’s words stayed with her. She realized she had missed half the conversation because her attention kept drifting to her phone. With a slight sigh, Mia placed her phone screen-down on the table.
As she looked around, she felt something she hadn’t experienced in a while: she was fully present. She noticed the way the sunlight streamed through the windows, casting a warm glow across the table. She laughed at a joke her friend Tom told, and this time, she genuinely heard every word. She joined in as her friends shared their latest stories, noticing little details she usually missed.
By the time they were finishing their meals, Mia felt a deep contentment. She hadn't just shared a meal with her friends; she had shared moments, memories, and laughter without distraction.
Later, as they walked out of the cafe, Mia glanced at her phone in her hand. It felt lighter somehow—more like a tool she could use when she needed, rather than something she had to be tethered to. She realized that by putting her phone down, she hadn’t missed anything. In fact, she had gained so much more.
