Eli was always on the go. He managed a bustling café, volunteered on weekends, and was working toward his degree on the side. He prided himself on keeping busy, but lately, he’d been feeling completely drained. Tasks that used to be simple felt like mountains, and his mind seemed to be running in circles. He could feel himself burning out, but he didn’t want to slow down. I just need to push a little harder, he kept telling himself.
One evening, as he stood in his café after closing time, Eli felt the weight of the day press down on him. The counters needed cleaning, tomorrow’s orders needed sorting, and his homework was waiting at home. He looked around the quiet, empty café and sighed, leaning against the counter. He knew he should get started, but his body was practically begging for rest.
Without really thinking about it, he made a decision: tonight, he would let himself rest. Leaving the café as it was, he headed home, brushed his teeth, and collapsed into bed. It wasn’t long before he fell into a deep, peaceful sleep.
In his dreams, Eli found himself in a tranquil garden. Tall trees shaded the paths, and a small stream trickled nearby, its sound soft and soothing. The air was calm, and he felt himself finally slowing down. As he walked, he noticed an old man sitting on a bench under a large tree, a gentle smile on his face.
“Hello, Eli,” the man said kindly, as if they were old friends.
“Hi,” Eli replied, feeling both curious and strangely relaxed. “Do I know you?”
The old man chuckled. “You know me well. I am Rest. You’ve been running yourself thin, my friend.”
Eli sighed, sitting down on the bench beside him. “It’s just that… there’s always so much to do. If I stop, I feel like I’ll fall behind.”
Rest nodded knowingly. “That’s a common feeling. But think of it this way: even the hardest-working machines need time to cool down and recharge. You’re no different. When you allow yourself to rest, you become sharper, stronger, and more focused.”
Eli thought about it, watching the sunlight dance through the leaves. “But won’t things fall apart if I’m not always pushing?”
The old man’s eyes twinkled. “On the contrary. Taking time to recharge will make you more effective. You’ll accomplish more, with a clearer mind and renewed energy.”
As they sat there, Eli felt a wave of calm wash over him. He realized he hadn’t felt this peaceful in a long time. The garden, the trees, the quiet—all of it reminded him how good it felt to let go, even if just for a while.
When Eli woke the next morning, he felt a deep sense of renewal. He got ready for the day, feeling fresher than he had in weeks. Tasks that used to feel overwhelming now seemed manageable, and his mind was clearer. He even came up with a few new ideas for his café and finished his homework in record time.
Eli realized that Rest was right. Giving himself a break hadn’t held him back; it had lifted him up. From that day forward, he made a point to build rest into his routine, letting himself recharge regularly. And he found that each time he did, he was more focused, more resilient, and far better equipped to handle the busy life he loved.
